What is Nutrition Coaching?

Nutrition coaching is a form of support, education, and guidance that is built on a coach-client relationship that entails trust, confidence, and respect.  My goal is to get to know you as an individual, understand your current lifestyle and habits, identify barriers, and co-create realistic goals for better health with a plan to help get you there.  Some examples of goals can be building muscle, losing fat, having more energy, chronic disease prevention, or better overall health.

Clients should be ready to make a commitment to themselves because results take time when they are done in a healthy way.  The purpose here is to create sustainable and lasting change.  Sometimes, setbacks and plateaus occur, but they are part of the progress continuum and can be a good place to reevaluate.

After completing an initial in-depth assessment, getting to know your current habits, and creating a plan unique to you, we will continue to have weekly coaching sessions where we can talk about what is going well and address obstacles that come up along the way. We will also discuss basic education on food and nutrition throughout our sessions.  I can provide nutrition resources, calculate body composition as a means to track progress (if applicable), provide nutrient goals, and will refer a client to other specialists if something specific is out of my scope.

*It is not within my scope to diagnose medical conditions or treat a medical diagnosis with nutrition alone.

Coaching vs. Meal Planning

How do you know which plan is right for you?  If you are new to learning about nutrition, struggle with knowing where to begin, or don't understand what your individual energy needs are, then coaching may be the best fit starting out. Coaching can provide accountability and a place to discuss lifestyle, contributing factors, and barriers along with learning about the numbers and basics of nutrition. I don't believe that feeding my clients specific meal plans is the best route for long term success, however, I do see value in offering a meal plan program where clients are in control, can personalize their settings and preferences, and can swap meals to better fit their needs. This type of meal planning combined with coaching can make a positive impact for clients.

Meal planning alone does not include the benefits of coaching. It is helpful for those who just need assistance with the time and mental load of creating meal ideas and grocery lists for the week in order to fit their caloric and macronutrient needs.

*Again, I do not prescribe meal plans with the intention of treating a specific medical condition.
